Bass Fishing 101

Tips, Tricks & Tactics That Actually Work

When it comes to freshwater fishing, bass are king and for good reason. They're aggressive, adaptable, and downright fun to catch. Whether you're a seasoned angler or just getting started, here are some tried-and-true tips from the Fish-On Tackle Club crew to help you land more bass on your next trip.

🐟 1. Understand the Bass Mindset

Bass are ambush predators. They love to hang near cover like weeds, logs, rocks, docks, and drop-offs waiting for the perfect time to strike. If you’re not casting near structure, you’re missing out.

🎯 2. Match the Season

  • Spring: Focus on shallow flats and use soft plastics or jigs near spawning beds.

  • Summer: Go deeper during the day, especially with crankbaits and drop shots. Topwaters shine early morning and late evening.

  • Fall: Bass chase baitfish try moving baits like spinnerbaits or lipless cranks.

  • Winter: Slow it down. Jigs and suspending jerkbaits can trigger cold-water bites.

🧰 3. Choose the Right Lure

Here’s a quick breakdown of what we love to use:

  • Topwater (frogs, poppers): Morning, evening, or over heavy vegetation

  • Crankbaits: Cover water fast and locate aggressive fish

  • Soft Plastics (worms, creature baits): Great for finesse fishing around structure

  • Spinnerbaits & Chatterbaits: Excellent for stained water and windy conditions

(Hint: Our monthly boxes often include a mix of these 😉)

🛠️ 4. Gear Matters but Don’t Overthink It

You don’t need $500 setups to catch bass. A medium-heavy rod, quality line, and a decent reel will go a long way. For line:

  • Braid for heavy cover

  • Fluorocarbon for clear water

  • Mono for topwater action

🎒 5. Keep Moving and Experimenting

Don’t be afraid to switch lures, techniques, or locations. If bass aren’t biting, try a different retrieve speed, change colors, or downsize your bait.

🧃 Bonus Tip: Stay Hydrated and Keep It Fun

Bass fishing is a game of patience, pattern-finding, and persistence. Enjoy the process, appreciate the time outdoors, and celebrate every catch—big or small.
